Borders (Sleepers)

What itinvolves.

Sleepers give a garden its edges. They hold a bed up, keep gravel where it belongs, and draw a clean line between lawn, path and planting.

We build sleeper borders and raised beds that are fixed properly, so they do not lean or creep, and that suit whatever sits next to them.

Good for

  • New garden layouts
  • Path edging
  • Raised beds
  • Hard landscaping

What is included

  • Sleeper border installation
  • Defining beds and pathways

Same garden,before and after.

This is one of ours. It started as a small garden lost under tall weeds and long grass, and finished as a garden you can use: a new lawn, timber borders and the base of the fence tidied.

After: a usable garden with a new lawn, timber borders and a tidied fence base.
Before: the same small garden overgrown with tall weeds and long grass.
A real Treetop job. Garden clearance, new lawn, timber borders. Drag the handle to compare.

What changesthe price.

Every quote is for the job in front of us, not a rate off a list. These are the things that move it.

  1. The length of the border, and how many sleepers high
  2. The timber: new softwood, oak or reclaimed
  3. The ground they sit on and how they are fixed
  4. Whether the beds are being filled with soil as well
  5. How they tie in with paving, turf or gravel

Worth knowingbefore you book.

  • Old railway sleepers

Genuine reclaimed railway sleepers were treated with creosote. They should not be used where skin will touch them often, or where food is grown. New sleepers do not have that problem.

  • Why raise a bed

A raised bed warms up sooner in spring, drains better, and is easier on the back.

Can you build raised beds for growing vegetables?

Yes. For beds where food is grown, new sleepers are the right choice rather than reclaimed railway ones.

Can sleepers hold back soil on a slope?

For low changes in level, yes. Send a photo and we will tell you what the slope needs.

Do sleeper borders work with gravel?

Yes. Keeping gravel and other loose materials where they belong is one of the main reasons to have them.
