When to lay it
Turf can go down for most of the year, as long as the ground is not frozen or baked hard. Autumn and spring are kindest: the soil is warm and there is rain to help it root.
The first few weeks
New turf needs watering every day in dry weather until it has rooted, and it should be kept off for the first two to three weeks. When you do start mowing, mow high.
Levels first
Hollows and humps under new turf are still there a year later. Getting the ground right before the turf arrives is most of the job.

Can you lay turf over an old lawn?
No. The old turf is lifted and the ground prepared first. Turf laid on top of an existing lawn roots badly and soon looks patchy.
When can I walk on it?
Light use after two to three weeks, once the turf has rooted and you can no longer lift a corner. Leave heavier use a little longer.
Do you level the ground first?
Yes. Ground preparation is part of the job, and proper levelling is what makes a lawn last.
Can you turf a new-build garden?
Yes. New-build plots are often compacted and thin on topsoil, so the preparation matters even more. See new build garden completion under solutions.
